Raison d’Être

I’m a penny-ante man
Stakes so thin, you see right through
On Monday night I’ve got comps for two
And I’m doing the best I can
I’m just getting by tonight
But I’ll be fine tomorrow

I always believed in you
But so did all the rest
With that loud refrain of “Just do your best”
That was the easiest thing that we could do
So in the very least, pretty please
Can you tell me if I ever
Got in the way of you being all you could

The French have that raison d’être
I think I’ve heard it said like this:
“L’homme fidèle, il aime le chocolat”

Don’t think that just because
I have always talked you up
There’ll be a lobster in every pot
Or a pretty man to light your cigarettes at the coffee shop
All the leaves have finally dropped
So now is not the time for feeling buttered up

I prayed that you would come back home
I’m sure you never knew
I never told you so, I never left a clue
There’s times you gotta go it alone
But if you looked it up
There would not be a doubt about it

The French have that raison d’être
I think I’ve heard it said like this:
“L’homme fidèle, il aime le chocolat”
